FTC to Conduct Consumer Fraud Survey

The Federal Trade Commission is seeking public comment on a proposal to conduct a survey to determine the prevalence of consumer fraud in the United States during 2016.

The FTC has conducted three previous surveys of consumer fraud; the most recent survey covered 2011. The surveys examine the extent of fraud and the degree to which certain groups of consumers are more or less likely to become victims. They serve to help the agency determine how best to combat fraud.

The Commission vote to publish a Notice in the Federal Register seeking public comment on the proposed consumer fraud survey was 4-0. The notice will be published in the Federal Register soon. Instructions for filing comments appear in the Federal Register Notice. Comments must be received on or before June 13, 2016. All comments received will be posted on the FTC’s website.
