NCPC Celebrates Crime Prevention Month Throughout October with Weekly Dedicated Crime Prevention Themes

Washington, DC, October 10, 2019 –(PR.com)– The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) celebrates crime prevention all year long, but since 1984, when NCPC designated October as Crime Prevention Month, communities have encouraged this outreach of educating the public and showcasing their accomplishments. This year during October, NCPC will dedicate a specific theme each week with crime prevention tips, materials, and resources to assist communities in spreading the word on crime prevention.

NCPC works with national partners to provide resources to help communities address each of these specific trends on a local level. The resources can include downloadable educational materials, printable handouts, videos, training materials, and links that will help law enforcement, crime prevention practitioners, and community groups with their crime prevention events during Crime Prevention Month and throughout the year.

NCPC kicks off Crime Prevention Month with preparations for McGruff the Crime Dog’s® 40th birthday on July 1, 2020. This includes sponsoring community events and sharing historical snippets.

Week Two will be dedicated to bullying and cyberbullying prevention messaging. Bullying has long been a troubling issue and now with the increasing dangers of cyberbullying and the long-term effects on youth, the concerns are greater and the need for prevention growing every day. October is also Bullying Prevention Month and NCPC will share valuable resources with our partners and communities to help stop bullying.

Week Three will highlight general crime prevention tips, resources, and best practices by providing information, links, and materials that can be distributed in neighborhoods and communities throughout the country.

Week Four will focus on the dangers of counterfeits. Counterfeit products cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars each year, impact jobs, increase safety hazards, and support criminal activity. NCPC wants to encourage all consumers to develop a desire to make smart buying decisions.

Week Five is dedicated to ridesharing safety issues. In collaboration with Uber, NCPC and its educational partner, Young Minds Inspired (YMI), have created Take Care of Each Other, a campus safety initiative that focuses on ridesharing safety both on and off campus. Together, they aim to remind students on rideshare safety practices throughout the year, especially during big events, including game days and Halloween. “NCPC always seeks to find topics that are top of mind when it comes to crime prevention,” said Ann Harkins, President and CEO of NCPC, “and this year, we have a full month of themes and resources available to the public that will give everyone a chance to Take A Bite Out Of Crime® this October.”
